ROYAL WINS BRITISH OPEN 20/12/05

Royal Marine Chris 'Tasty' Sherrington has completed a very successful year by winning the heavyweight category at the British Open.  He is now firmly established as Great Britains number one heavyweight
and will represent GB at international competitions during 2006.  Congratulations mate and we wish you all the success in 2006.

ROYAL NAVY JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005
02/12/05

The Royal Navy Judo Championships were held at HMS Nelson on the 26th November 2005. The Royal Marines hoped to gain revenge for last years defeat by the Navy but after some very close fights the Navy team came away with a victory 3 wins to 2. The highlight of the day was provided by the duels between LAEM Clement and MNE New; two very experienced Judo players who tried everything to gain the advantage over each other and only the slightest mistake resulting in a score for the opponent. These two players are extremely well matched, one of their fights went on for an extra five minutes golden score time because the scores were still tied. MNE Sherrington continues to show considerable improvement. After his recent victory at the Great Britain Trials he is firmly established on the British Team and a future Olympic hope. CPO Thacker took gold in the under 90 KG - 27 years!!!! after winning his first Navy Championship. Spirit of Judo Award went to CPO Creswell and a special award for Service to RN Judo went to Pete Powell who has been involved in RN Judo for nearly 30 years.

ROYAL NAVY JUDO TEAM FIGHTS WORLD CHAMPION 02/11/05

A team of Royal Navy judo players raised their game to an outstanding level at the Beverley Price Memorial Team Championships where they battled it out to take a well-deserved bronze medal.

The team consisting of LAEA Stephen Watson (lightweight), LAEM James Clement (middleweight) and Lt Mark Shaw (Heavyweight) fought tremendously throughout the day stopped only by the world class and eventual winners ‘Hardy Spicer’ in the semi-finals.

The Hardy Spicer was always going to be the team to beat as the 2005 World Champion Craig Fallon fought in their middleweight category.  James Clement gave it his all in this exciting battle but was eventually held down by the World Champion.

This being their 1st loss of the day put the team into the loser’s pool where they had to beat an extremely strong and highly respected Erdington Judo team for the bronze medal.

Congratulations to the Navy team for a superb performance.

The competition took place at the University of Wolverhampton on Saturday 29 October 05 and the standard of judo was tremendous with many top class British squad players in attendance.  Congratulations to last year’s winning team the RAF whom also took a bronze medal losing to eventual silver medallists ‘Pinewood’.

Please view photos from this competition at the photo gallery.

Most members fought as part of a British Forces Team 'V' Ontario Select Team.  Unfortunatley the British where defeated and Ontario now lead 2-1.

All the RN/RM players fought outstandingly at the two above events.  The star of the AMCAN was LAEM 'Clem' Clement whom defeated the two best US players in the U73Kg division on his way to the Gold.  The standard of the event has increased this year as the tournament is now a US National Ranking Event, so all the best US/Canadian squad players where on display along with players from various former Russian states.  I think this makes our medal haul all that more impressive.

The RN/RM players took a total of 16 medals and 2 team trophies from the tour.  I would like to thank WO Smudge Smith, Flt Lt Sallyanne Turner and Flt Lt Steve Parlor for allowing the RN players to accompany the RAF on the tour - without their help the tour would not have been what it was - Many Thanks.  Also many thanks to the staff at HMS Temeraire for continuing to support the team and for the Lottery Grants.

A special message to Sallyanne (Tour Manager), get well soon as she fractured 2 bones in her arm at the AMCAN and received 2 plates and 12 screws as her prize.  See you on the mat soon!!

For all those players who may be interested in attending the tour in 2006 - please forward your names to John Thacker if you wish to be considered.

SOAPY WATSON SEES BLACK 30/04/05

LAEA Steve 'Soapy' Watson, another player from HMS SULTAN achieves his 1st Dan.  Soapy or Irish (he has quite a few nicknames - 'The Claw'!!) successfully gained the 100 points required for his first Dan.  He was once a Dan grade many moons ago but due to an administrational error when joining the BJA from Ireland, he had to start from white belt for a second time!  Also Soapy has only just recovered from a career threatening injury which makes his achievement all the more impressive.  Soapy, well done.

LAEM JACK RUSSELL ACHIEVES DAN 30/04/05

LAEM' Jack' Russell after years, finally achieved the coveted Black Belt.  Jack who represents HMS SULTAN Judo Club gain his 1st Dan after successfully competing the theory examination in March.  He had tallied an impressive 250 points towards the grade (he only required 100 to pass!!).  On behalf of all at the RNJA ..congratulations.

WEBSITE RE-LAUNCH 30/04/05

After months of work the new and improved RNJA website has been re-launched.  The site is for all RN/RM player giving you information on events/competitions.  If there are any articles or items that you think would be worthy of inclusion please contact the webmaster on royalnavyjudo@yahoo.co.uk.  Very many thanks to Dave Wassell for his continued support and tolerance.

INTER-SERVICE JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2005 RESULTS  22/03/05

DAN GRADE TEAM

OVER 100                  MNE SHERRINGTON

UNDER 100                LT SHAW

UNDER 90                  CPO CLARK

UNDER 81                  CPL NEW

UNDER 73                  LAEM CLEMENT

UNDER 66                  CPO JEFFERS

UNDER 60                  BYE

This was probably the strongest team for a number of years that the Navy could put together, there are still a number of players that could not make it but this was the best on the day.

RESULTS

RN V RAF

 5 – 2

This was the best result for some time against the RAF. CPO JEFFERS also produced an outstanding performance against his opponent, he seemed to pull something out of the bag, considering his age!! CPL NEW pulled off an outstanding win over a nationally ranked player and of course CPO Clark, who never really got going on this one, I put it down to stress of the organising the event!  We are also short of the lightweights!

RN V ARMY

3 – 4

It was expected this could be our year against the Army but as is the norm events went against us, it was unfortunate that MNE Sherrington was disqualified, a decision, which I did comment on, but the result still stood. LAEM Clement proved again how unfit he was again but next year!!!! (Joke!!)  And again an outstanding battle for CPO Jeffers. With yet another bye for the U60, here is to next year as the Army are worried!

KYU GRADE TEAM

OVER 100                  OM FRADGELY

UNDER 100               OM CURTIS-DAWSON

UNDER 90                  MNE EVES

UNDER 81                  LAEA WATSON

UNDER 73                  LAEM RUSSELL

UNDER 66                  MNE BELCHER

UNDER 60                  BYE

RN V ARMY

2 – 4

Quite a few Kyu grades did not show up due to operational commitments, however a team was produced that has a lot of positives for the future.

MNE EVES despite his loss proved that he has quite a future, he is only an orange belt but has big potential. LAEA WATSON has also come back from injury and is beginning to get back to his best and OM CURTIS-DAWSON needs a lesson in anger management but he does keep coming to these events, he only came back on the Monday before the competition from Sea! OM FRADGELY, I believe surprised his opposition, as the ARMY guy had no real answer to his persistence. Overall to gain 2 wins and a draw against the ARMY was exceptional and these gives us hope for the future, bring ‘em on next year!

RN V RAF

2 – 4

The RAF have a very strong team in this Team, two outstanding achievements was the determination to do better from LAEA WATSON and LAEM RUSSELL, two incredible wins against good players. Each of these players have proved themselves over and over again, and their experience helps others, both soon will be Dan grades.

LADIES TEAM

UNDER 63                  PO BATES

UNDER 70                  WTR GITTENS

OVER 70                     DSA PARSONS

This was going to be difficult for our girls as there is a shortage of these players in the RN, there were also some girls who were unavailable, maybe we can work towards next year and get these girls to come back.

RN V ARMY

1 – 3

They all fought well and as this is her first real contest Jane Bates did exceptionally well………. Until she lost! However her determination to compete means she will be back and be a lot more improved, she has come away with honours, 10 seconds worth of being famous.

RN V RAF

1 – 3

The only one to win was Vicky Gittens, however the RAF girls were of seasoned international blood and so or girls did well. I do feel that Parsons was robbed however, the RAF girl landed on her back with the leg in the air and Vicky lost!!!!

INDIVIDUALS

OVER 100

PLAYERS

1. BEDDINGTON  2. SHERRINGTON

MEDALISTS

GOLD – MNE SHERRINGTON

SILVER – LWTR BEDDINGTON

This was payback time for MNE SHERRINGTON as he took on the ARMY guy who he was disqualified against and showed the talent that he has by producing a superb throw in the first minute and then comprehensively destroyed the rest of the field, proving why he is in the British Team Squad. Another player who showed a talent for grit and determination was WTR BEDDINGTON who came back from sea on the CARDIFF and with hardly any training got a silver medal, he could be better with more training, IF HE CAN THE TIME OFF!

UNDER 100

PLAYERS

1.     FRADGELY 2. CURTIS-DAWSON 3. SHAW

MEDALLISTS

GOLD – LT SHAW

SILVER – OM FRADGELY

Although both our players in the heats were under par, not very fit and lacking match fitness, they performed outstandingly and took the top two medals comprehensively.

UNDER 90

PLAYERS

1.      CLARK 2. POWELL I 3. EVES

MEDALLISTS

BRONZE – CPO CLARK

CPO CLARK woke up now for his weight group fights and got into the knock out but came up against a very good ARMY player and was passed to the reparcharge where he got the bronze medal. New guy on the block, or better older guy on the block and a welcome return after 5 years in the wilderness was Ian Powell, brother of the Team Manager, who took part and started to get himself back in the routine and good asset to have for the future

UNDER 81

PLAYERS

1. CPL NEW (WITHDREW INJURED) 2. LOM FALLOWS 3. AEM FERRIS

4. LWEA McGING 5. LAEA WATSON

NO MEDALS WON

One made it through to the knock out, LAEA WATSON, but unfortunately came unstuck in the first round of the knock out stage. All the others hopefully gained experience from taking part and could be an asset to the team for the coming year.

UNDER 73

PLAYERS

1.      LAEM CLEMENT

MEDALLISTS

SILVER – LAEM CLEMENT

LAEM CLEMENT still has the after affects of his illness but at least we could see him coming back to life again, and a year on from now should get him back up to the high standard of Judo we saw previously. But he did lose against an excellent ARMY player.

UNDER 66

PLAYERS

1.      CPO JEFFERS (INJURED) 2. LAEA RUSSELL 3. MEA SUMNER

MEDALLISTS

BRONZE – LAEM RUSSELL

Came up against stiff opposition in this group but RUSSELL got through to the reparcharge to get the BRONZE. Our one hope for the future is MEA SUMNER who has not done any Judo for a year and was a British Cadet player before that, showed good promise for the future and maybe in the under 60 kg as he used to fight at 60kgs, will be interested to watch his development.

LADIES

U70

PLAYERS

1.      WTR GITTINS (WITHDRAWN)  2. DSA PARSONS  3. PO BATES

MEDALLISTS

SILVER – DSA PARSONS

This was payback time for DSA PARSONS who took on her counterpart from the team competition and she did it in style …in the first minute, excellent work by Vicky and Jane, which has given them more experience to go forward.

OTHER PLAYERS ATTENDING

1.  CPO BOWEN (ILL)  2. LWTR GREEN  (INJURED) 3. LT COL S BRUCE

4.  AEA BROWN        5. WTR DAVEY

SUMMARY

To summarise the whole squad produced something extraordinary this year compared to previous years and looking through the team sheets there are players out there who are the future Navy Judo Team.

Those others players who for operational or personal reasons could not be with us this year, there is next year to come and we need your support as you have over this year which has been tremendous and it must continue so that we can build another team that will be capable of, and it will be sooner rather than later, winning Gold in all three Team competitions.

We still have a problem with the lower weight groups in the men’s events if you know any players in the under 60 KGs group call them up or press gang them, the RNJA needs them and also we need more Ladies to take up the reigns with Vicky and Jane so look out for them.

The website is now up and running successfully but it still needs your input into it, with up to date information on personal, events and even dits of special importance to the RNJA and its members, just log onto:

www.rnjudo.com

IT IS YOUR WEBSITE

A hearty congratulations must go out to LAEM JACK RUSSELL who during the competition successfully got the points required to gain his Black belt and about time as well!

And also to CPO CHRIS BOWEN, who never took part but was officially awarded his Dan Grade for his help and support of the RNJA over the years.

And finally thanks to you the players, coaches, roadies, groupies and hangers on for all the support you have given the RNJA and its clubs, please keep this up as it is you who can make this happen, help as you have done before to support and encourage new and old players to come into the training sessions.

And a special thanks goes out to AEA Brown and WTR Davey who helped to look after the VIP, outstanding work guys thanks!!!!!!

Look forward to seeing you all next year
