The British Army invited RN/RM Judokas to participate in their annual skills/coaching week at the Physical Training School in Aldershot. A total of twelve RN/RM players attended the week, achieving coaching/referee awards, theory examinations and plenty of practical skills. I would like to thank all at ASPT/Army Judo for their time and allowing us to take part – see you at the Inter Services in March!!

CHRIS SHERRINGTON 03/11/04

Royal Marine Chris Sherrington of CTCRM took a 3rd place at the Scottish Open on the 31st Oct 2004.  This is a great achievement as the Scottish Ranking Event is renowned as one of the toughest competitions on the calendar.  During this year Chris has also been achieved national ranking points in the Welsh Open and the Heart of England competitions, finishing the year nationally ranked 8th in the heavyweight category.  Congratulations and hope you have great success in 2005.

PAUL CHADWICK 26/10/04

It is the sad news that former Royal Marine Paul Chadwick was recently killed in Iraq whilst conducting security / escorting duties. Many in the RNJA / BJA will know Paul who was a keen and very skilled Judoka. During his years in the Royal Marines he was an active member of RN Judo competing successfully in Ranking Events across the country and also represented the Combined Services Judo at International tournaments in USA and Canada. He still trained closely with RN/RM players, notably at New Forest Park JC, Hampshire. Paul will be missed but not forgotten.

ROYAL NAVY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004 26/10/04

The Royal Navy Judo Championships was held at HMS Nelson on the 03 Oct 04. The largest entry for many years and some very close fights made for a spectacular days Judo. Highlight of the day were the bouts between MNE New and AEM Clement, which saw both players tested to their limits. Their first fight saw MNE New gain a decisive victory in the Under 81 Kg final, however they were to meet again in the ‘RN v RM’ team competition where AEM Clement gained his revenge in a thrilling fight. The Team competition ‘RN v RM’ is always a closely fought event and the Marines brought a strong team with the intension of retaining the Team Trophy. The Royal Navy had other ideas and produced a tremendous effort to take the team Competition 5-0.

CHRIS ACHIEVES DAN GRADE 14/10/04

Chris Bowen of RAF COSFORD achieved the grade of 1st DAN on 09 Oct 04. He was instrumental in the start up of the RN clubs in the Portsmouth area along with Pete Powell and it took Chris only 7 years training to gain the grade and this included time at a front line draft. On behalf of all at the RNJA well done on the promotion.

ROYAL NAVY JUDO PLAYERS TAKE INTERNATIONAL HONOURS 11/10/04

The Royal Navy Judo Team combined with the RAF and British Army under the flag of ‘British Forces’ attended two International competitions, the AMCAN Tournament held at Buffalo USA and the CANADIAN OPEN held at Burlington Canada.  This is the first year the Royal Navy has attended with such numbers.

The team, consisting of Senior Coach PO Pete Powell, Coach CPO Ian Clark, LWEA’s Clive McGing and David Kelley, AEM James Clement, CPL John Manual, MNEs Chris Sherrington and Richard Hill and DSA Vicky Parsons.  The Tour party left Gatwick to fly to Toronto with the other forces on the 24th May, then set up camp in Niagara Falls area for pre-tournament training prior to the first competition in Buffalo. A rest day was organised during this intensive training where the team visited various sights including Niagara Falls.

The standard of competition at the AMCAN was impressive including many players from a host of countries whom will be attending this years Olympics in Athens.  Performance of the day was undoubtedly by AEM James Clement of HMS SULTAN who fought valiantly, one fight lasting an impressive 10 minutes!  His progress to the gold medal was halted by two Olympians representing Uzbekistan but James completed the tournament winning a bronze medal.

After a successful American tournament, a days recovery was needed before the team moved base camp to a new location in Canada. Here several Judo Clubs in the region attended ‘Fight Nights’ with the British Players, good experience was gained by all prior to the Tournament in Burlington Canada. With the success gained from the first tournament the teams fought exceptionally in this one.  The tour climax was a trip into Toronto, visiting the CN Tower with the Glass floor a 1471 feet up!

The results of the RN Judo players representing a combined British Forces Team at the AMCAN (30/05) and Canadian Open (05/06) Tournaments are as follows:
