RNJA Chairman’s Introduction
Having
returned to Judo, after what seems like an age, I must say that it is
an enormous honour to be voted in as the RNJA Chairman at the AGM held
at HMS Temeraire in October of this year. Some of you will know
that I have now taken the reins from Lt Col Bruce RM who headed up the
RNJA for the last nine years. I sincerely hope to be able to
serve the Association membership to the same degree as the Col has
done, this near past decade, and wish him luck in his future endeavours.
I
returned to Judo, just by chance, after returning last year to the UK
from a NATO appointment and stumbled across an old Judo player
colleague who introduced me to two stalwarts of the RNJA. CPO
John Thacker (RNJA Secretary) and CPO Ian ‘Nobby’ Clark (Team
Manager). These two Chiefs have been instrumental in raising the
RN/RM Judo profile under the leadership of the then Chairman.
However, the challenges of deployments for both Royal Marines, 3 CDO
BDE were deployed to Afghanistan, and the busy Navy Operational
programme meant that many players were either deployed, or on duty,
when key events in the RNJA calendar neared. That said both
Chiefs have done a marvelous job in identifying players for the various
events. CPO Nobby Clark is now collating and updating judo
players’ details and amassing a portfolio of individual player skills
and contact information. Nobby has the lead on this specific task
and I would ask all Judo players to keep Nobby abreast of changes in
personal details including mobile telephone numbers and recent
gradings, including civilian competition experience too. He may
be contacted via face book or mobile 07968 188354.
Many of you
will also have seen the recent results from the Inter-Service
Championships held at DCAE Cosford 12th Nov. This built on
earlier successes as the RN vs. the Channel Islands and the RN Judo
Championships earlier in the year. Thus the RN is on a roll
supported by a dedicated and committed core of Judo players spread
amongst the Service. The Inter-Service Championships were truly a
superb result and the RN team came away with a clutch of medals and the
outright winners of the Inter-Service Kyu Grade trophy. An
excellent result that dispossessed the Army of this trophy. The
Dan Grade team event was closely fought with only one point separating
Bronze (RN), Silver and Gold team medal final places.
The year
2010 again offers an exciting year for RN Judo. I am eagerly
looking forward to representing your interests and even competing
myself. My focus, for the coming year, is to build on what we
have already achieved and to actively encourage RN/RM Judo with
particular emphasis on recruiting more female members. CPO
Thacker informed me that there are female players in the Service and so
I am interested in recruiting them to the team. Any Judo player
who knows of another, who may not know of this new drive to recruit
more male and female players, is encouraged to spread the word.
All
Judo players, no matter what level of experience, are warmly welcome to
join, either for the first time, or re-join like I have done, after a
period of enforced absence through operational commitment or
injury. Additionally, there are courses, that could be taken as
adventurous training, advertised in Army Pamphlet 16A/16C at the Army
School of Physical Training in Aldershot and Germany – contact your
local PTI for more details or go on line www.armynet.mod.uk or, for
those with a coaching interest, www.ukcoachingcertificate.org. Finally,
as a result of the recent Inter-Service Championships RAdm Montgomery,
Naval Secretary and COS (Personnel) warmly congratulated all players
with his personal BZ in recognition of the individual and team efforts.
I look forward to meeting you at forthcoming events and hearing how you believe RN Judo could be taken forward.
Yours, in Judo,
John Baxter Lt Cdr RNJA Chairman
- RN/RM team at the inter-services.
